There are few places where such a small design detail manages to annoy so many people as much as public restrooms.

You walk into a stall, close the door — and then you notice that strange feature once again: there is a huge gap between the bottom of the door and the floor.

Sometimes, you can see the shoes of the person in the next stall through it. Small children can even bend down and look inside, and in some public restrooms, especially in the United States, the gaps along the sides of the door are wide enough to make people wonder who exactly decided that privacy was optional.

So why not simply make a door that extends almost all the way to the floor, like a normal door?

It turns out that the gap isn't necessarily the result of poor design. Behind it is a combination of practical considerations: cleanliness, maintenance, safety, cost, being able to tell whether a stall is occupied — and, in some buildings, accessibility requirements.

And the most interesting part is that there isn't actually just one reason.

The first reason is very simple: it makes cleaning much easier

Try to imagine a cleaner who has to wash the floor of a public restroom with ten or twenty stalls.

If every door and partition reached all the way to the floor, they would have to open each stall individually, step inside, maneuver the mop, step back out, open the next stall — and repeat the process over and over.

When the partitions and doors are raised above the floor, a mop, broom, or wet vacuum can be moved underneath them, allowing the cleaner to move quickly across the entire restroom.

Instead of every stall functioning almost like a separate little room, the floor remains essentially one continuous surface that is much easier to wash and maintain.

Restroom partition manufacturer ASI even explicitly notes that the bottom clearance in traditional systems makes cleaning easier and allows cleaning equipment to move freely underneath the partitions.

In a busy place such as an airport, shopping mall, stadium, or school, a few minutes saved during every cleaning round can add up to a significant amount of time.

And if something happens to someone inside the stall, it can be noticed more quickly

The gap can also be useful in an emergency.

If someone faints, falls, or suffers a medical emergency inside a locked stall, being able to see part of the space underneath the door may help people outside realize that something is wrong.

In some situations, equipment can also be passed through the gap, or the door mechanism may be easier to access than it would be in a completely enclosed stall.

However, it's worth making one distinction: modern systems can provide almost complete privacy while still incorporating dedicated emergency-release mechanisms. Today's manufacturers offer stalls with extremely small gaps and taller doors equipped with locks that can be released from the outside in an emergency.

In other words, a huge gap underneath the door isn't the only way to maintain safety.

But in cheaper and more common systems, it can certainly make it easier to identify an unusual situation.

It also immediately answers one of the most awkward questions in a public restroom

“Occupied?”

We all know the situation.

There's a line.

The door is closed.

It's unclear whether someone is inside or whether the door simply closed on its own.

Someone knocks.

An embarrassed voice answers from the other side.

Or worse — there is no answer at all, and the person tries to open the door.

When there is a gap underneath the door, sometimes all it takes is a quick look to see whether there is a pair of shoes inside.

The restroom partition industry also lists “visible occupancy indication” — the ability to tell from outside whether a stall is in use — as one of the advantages of the gap beneath traditional partitions.

Today, of course, there is a much more elegant solution.

In newer, more private stalls, the lock may have a red or green indicator showing from the outside whether the stall is available.

And then there is no need to check who is hiding underneath the door.

If the lock gets stuck, at least you have a rather undignified way out

It may not be how you would want to leave a public restroom, but in an extreme situation, the gap underneath the door can become an escape route.

If the door mechanism gets stuck and cannot be opened from inside, someone who is physically able to do so may be able to crawl underneath the partition.

The original article identifies this as one of the practical advantages of the design.

It's certainly not an ideal solution, and it won't work for everyone or every stall, but it's better to know that the option exists than to remain trapped and start shouting for help.

Ran out of toilet paper? Suddenly, that gap becomes your best friend

This is one of the less “engineering-oriented” benefits — and a much more human one.

You walk into the stall.

It's already too late to turn back.

Then you discover that the roll is empty.

If there is someone in the neighboring stall or a friend waiting outside, the gap underneath the door makes it possible to pass a new roll through without opening the stall.

The original article also presents this scenario as one of the unintended but undeniably convenient uses of the gap.

At that moment, suddenly, all the arguments in favor of complete privacy feel a little less urgent.

Cost also plays a role — much more than you might think

Perhaps the least exciting reason is simply money.

A 150-centimeter-high door requires less material than a door that extends almost from floor to ceiling.

When you're dealing with a restroom with two stalls, the difference isn't dramatic.

But think about a restaurant chain with thousands of locations, a university with dozens of buildings, or an airport with hundreds of restroom stalls.

Using less material for every door and partition can translate into very significant savings in manufacturing, transportation, and installation.

Traditional American restroom systems rely heavily on modular components manufactured in factories to standard dimensions and then assembled on-site. This approach is faster and cheaper, and it is also more forgiving when walls and floors aren't perfectly straight.

And this is also one of the reasons the gaps aren't only at the bottom.

The same manufacturing and installation considerations explain some of those annoying gaps between the door and the frame.

So why do many restrooms in Europe look different?

It's a question many tourists ask after visiting the United States.

In many European countries, stalls that feel more like small rooms are more common: taller doors, minimal gaps along the sides, and partitions that extend much closer to the floor and sometimes even to the ceiling.

In the United States, on the other hand, more open modular restroom stalls have been common for decades.

But even there, things are beginning to change.

American companies now offer “European-style cubicles” with taller doors and partitions, no direct sightlines into the stall, and a gap of only a few centimeters above the floor. Bobrick, one of the largest manufacturers in the industry, for example, offers systems with a bottom clearance of just one inch, alongside traditional systems where the gap can reach approximately 12 inches — more than 30 centimeters.

In other words, there is no law of nature requiring us to see the shoes of the person in the next stall.

It's mainly a matter of design tradition and budget.

And what about accessibility? That's where things get a little more complicated

One claim that often appears online is that the huge gap underneath the door exists because of accessibility laws.

That's only part of the picture.

American accessibility standards do require certain stalls to have toe clearance underneath the front partition and underneath at least one side partition, allowing wheelchair users to approach and maneuver more comfortably.

The standard calls for at least 9 inches — about 23 centimeters — of clearance in certain situations.

But that doesn't mean every public restroom door has to end 30 centimeters above the floor.

Accessible stalls can be built with doors and partitions that provide much more privacy, as long as the other space and maneuvering requirements are met.

That's why accessible stalls with an almost fully enclosed, European-style design also exist today.

Is the gap really there to prevent sex and drug use?

This is one of the most popular claims on the internet.

According to the theory, stalls that aren't completely private discourage people from using them for sexual activity, drug use, or other activities unrelated to their intended purpose.

The original article quotes users who claim that this is one of the main explanations.

It's harder to establish that this was the primary historical reason for the design.

Open systems do give employees a better ability to notice if a stall has been occupied for an unusually long time or if something unusual is happening inside, but the industry itself points more toward modular manufacturing, cleaning, cost, and installation as the fundamental reasons behind the traditional design.

So it's more accurate to view discouraging undesirable behavior as a possible benefit — rather than necessarily the single reason someone invented the shortened door.

And what about ventilation and odors?

There is some logic to this as well.

When a stall isn't completely enclosed from floor to ceiling, the air inside can mix more easily with the air throughout the restroom.

The room's ventilation system can remove odors more effectively than it could if every stall were a completely sealed room requiring its own separate airflow.

ASI lists ventilation as one of the operational considerations behind open partition systems.

However, this doesn't mean that a private stall has to be stuffy.

A suitable ventilation system can also be designed for restrooms where the stalls are almost completely enclosed.

Once again, it's a matter of design and cost.

And the price we pay for all these advantages is obvious: privacy

This is the part where almost everyone agrees.

Nobody likes feeling that someone might be able to see inside while they're sitting on the toilet.

Partition manufacturers themselves acknowledge that gaps and sightlines are among the most common complaints from public restroom users. Bobrick now even markets systems specifically designed to eliminate the possibility of peeking through the gaps altogether.

And that's interesting.

Because if the gaps were absolutely essential for safety and operation, we wouldn't be seeing more and more new stalls that eliminate them almost completely.

You can have cleanliness.

You can have safety.

You can have accessibility.

And you can have privacy, too.

It simply sometimes costs more and requires more advanced planning.

So why do they keep building them this way?

Mainly because it's a familiar, inexpensive, modular solution that is easy to install.

A standard partition with legs, a short door, and components that arrive ready-made from the factory can work in a wide variety of buildings.

There's no need to build an actual wall for every stall.

Not every wall has to be perfectly straight.

It's easier to replace a damaged component.

It's easier to clean the floor.

And you can quickly see whether a stall is occupied.

Once a particular system becomes an industry standard, it's very difficult to change it — especially when the alternative costs more.

That's why, even though technology already allows for much greater privacy, classic restroom stalls can still be found almost everywhere.

So the next time you see the gap, at least you'll know it isn't there for no reason

You might still hate it.

And that's fair.

No explanation involving mops, ventilation, or costs can make the moment when a small child peeks underneath the door any more pleasant.

But the gap underneath the door is essentially the result of a compromise.

It makes things easier for cleaning crews.

It makes it possible to see whether a stall is occupied.

It may help in an emergency.

It simplifies manufacturing and installation.

It can improve airflow.

And in some systems, clearance beneath the partitions also plays a role in meeting accessibility requirements.

The downside is that all of these advantages come at the expense of the one thing most of us want more than anything else when we close the restroom door:

A little privacy.

So the next time you sit in a public restroom, look at the huge gap underneath the door, and think, “Who the hell designed this?”, you'll know the answer isn't that someone forgot to order a door in the right size.

It was designed that way on purpose — but the fact that there are now stalls that extend almost all the way to the floor proves that it is entirely possible to do the same thing in a much less embarrassing way.
