When you think about the dangers of the ocean, you might not often hear about square waves.
These waves, known as cross seas, look amazing but can be very risky for anyone who gets in, like boats, surfers, and especially swimmers.
This stunning ocean event happens when waves from different directions meet and form squares in the water. The image above shows Île de Ré, an island off the west coast of France, where cross seas happen often.
It happens when waves from one weather system keep moving even after wind changes create new waves.
As a result, the waves move at different angles and create this beautiful sight.
When the waves move this way, lots of people come to watch.
But beneath this amazing view, there are dangers that can capsize even large ships.
Experts advise keeping your distance
It's hard to know exactly why some ships have sunk in the past, but researchers think many have gone down because of cross seas.
Boats are meant to go with the waves, but if waves come at you from different angles, it can be really dangerous.
