A new study says: The more time you spend with your mother, the longer she will live
|
When was the last time you saw your mother?
If you think about the answer to this question then invite her to dinner or go see her now!
This is if you want to follow the advice from this study conducted in 2012.
The study found that loneliness is an important factor in the quality of life for older people. Loneliness increases the risk of depression, cognitive impairment, and health problems such as cardiovascular disease, which can lead to premature death.
The study looked at 1600 adults at an average age of 71 years.
The researchers found that 23 percent of the individuals who reported they were alone died within six years of the study. On the other hand, only 14 percent of those who indicated they had a company died during the same period of 6 years.
The findings, published in JAMA Internal Medicine, remained the same even after examining factors such as health and socioeconomic status.
In another 2010 study, published in PLoS Medicine, it has been shown that social connections can be as important in extending life and staying healthy and doing sports.
"Our social connections are important not only for our quality of life, but also for the extension of our lives", said study author Julianne Holt-Lunstad, a psychology professor at Brigham Young University in Utah.
"Throughout human history, we have relied on others for survival as protection and food", she said. "And despite the modern development that may have helped with certain aspects of survival so that we can live independently, our relationships still seem to have an impact on our chances of becoming extinct".
Laughter is the best medicine
The study also showed that loneliness and social isolation are harmful to overall health. In fact, loneliness is considered a greater health risk than smoking or being overweight.
Spending time with your loved ones often leads to laughter and laughter is the strongest remedy against bad health. It has been shown that laughter strengthens the immune system, lowers blood pressure, and causes blood flow and improved brain activity.
