Homeless man asked a Burger King employee 'What can I buy with 50 cents?' - the boy's answer amazed everyone

When we see someone in trouble, we have two choices: say something unkind and walk away, or actually help them. It really comes down to those two options.

We usually feel more inclined to help people we know, like family or friends. But with strangers, especially homeless people, we might not feel as invested.

Maybe we’re scared, or we think someone else will step in to help, or maybe we doubt that they really need help or that they’ll use our help wisely, like for food instead of alcohol or drugs. Regardless of the reason, homeless people are some of the most vulnerable individuals out there, and they definitely need support.

It seems that a young Burger King worker named Matthew Resendez really gets this.

One evening, while Matthew was working, a homeless man came into the restaurant. Matthew was used to seeing homeless people there, but this guy had a different question.

The man walked up to the counter and asked, "What can I get for 50 cents?"

When Matthew heard this, he had two choices. He could have given a straightforward answer: "Nothing," since 50 cents wouldn’t buy anything on the menu. But that’s not how Matthew responded.

A kind act

Matthew picked the biggest meal on the menu and paid for it himself.

The story could have ended there, but a customer in the restaurant saw Matthew’s kind act and decided to reward him with a $100 tip!

When Matthew's mom, Michelle Resendez, heard about what happened, she felt really proud of her son. She later shared the story on Facebook.

"Proud mom moment! Matthew worked tonight and a homeless man came in with 50 cents, asking if there was anything he could buy. Matthew asked what the man would choose if he could pick anything, and the man said anything would help his hunger. So, Matthew picked a big meal and used his credit card to pay for it. He gave the man the receipt and told him to sit down and relax. That would have been a nice ending, but then a woman saw what my son did. Not only did she tell the company about his caring nature, but she also gave him a generous tip! I’m so proud to be his mom and I know I played a big part in raising this kind-hearted young man."

“If it had been someone else, they might have told the homeless man to leave without giving him anything. But Matthew isn’t like that. He’s a remarkable young man who wants to change how needy people are treated, and he was rewarded for it.”
