A traveling photographer found a 'hole' in the desert. But what he discovered inside amazed the whole world!
|
There are a lot of amazing places around the world, but I have to say this is one of the wildest we've ever come across.
It might look like something from a sci-fi movie, but it's totally real. Come with us on an incredible journey deep underground..
Coober Pedy, a town in the southern part of Australia, is in a really harsh area.
In the summer, temperatures can go over 40 degrees Celsius, and it gets really cold at night.
In Coober Pedy, you have to watch where you’re walking because you'll see warning signs like these everywhere.
That’s because there are “holes” like these all over the place. I wonder what the photographer thought when they saw this..
Yep, the place is full of these "holes". This picture was taken from way up high, from the sky.
They discovered the rare gemstone Opal here in 1915, and Coober Pedy has over 70 Opal fields. That’s why it’s known as "The Opal Capital of the World".
This could have been just another mining town..
But when you see this, you start to wonder… what’s underneath?
An Underground City!
A few years back, the miners came up with a smart solution to deal with the intense heat outside: they decided to build everything underground. They started making homes, which also made it easier to get to work.
In these underground homes, the temperature is pretty nice. A typical apartment has two bedrooms, a kitchen, a living room, and bathrooms. They painted the stone walls to stop dust from coming off them.
Can you imagine living in a place like this?
Most homes, businesses, and buildings in Coober Pedy are found in holes and caves.
They even have a church. Pretty cool, right?
A jewelry store..
.. and a bookstore.
You can chill out in their underground pub with a cold beer..
and play some pool..
Most of the 2000 people living in Coober Pedy continue to build and live underground. The name "Coober Pedy" comes from the Aboriginal word "Kupa Pit," which means "Cave of a white man."
If you ever visit, you can stay in an underground hotel. But we think it's a good idea to make sure you're not claustrophobic first..
There are also some attractions above ground too.. they have a 9-hole golf course.
Because it gets so hot during the day, it's better to play golf at night. The Coober Pedy golf club even has a partnership with the famous Scottish golf club, St. Andrews, which is known as the "home" of golf.
As you can see, there are plenty of things to do there. For example, this spacecraft from the sci-fi movie "Pitch Black".
And if none of that interests you, you can just take in the stunning desert views.
