How it works: Ursolic acid and tomatidine
A team of researchers from the University of Iowa in the US discovered that two compounds have an inhibitory effect on ATF4, the genetic transcription factor responsible for age-related muscle weakness, the ursolic acid found in apple peel and tomatidine found in green tomatoes.
These two substances act as the off switch, which brings out the deterioration of the muscles called ATF4, a type of protein.
The findings, published online September 3, 2015, in the journal Biological Chemistry, could lead to new treatments for age-related muscle weakness and degeneration.
The researchers found that after only two months of consuming the ursolic acid and tomatidine added to their diet, the rodents showed a significant increase in muscle mass and muscle strength.
Their muscle mass increased by 10% and muscle strength increased by 30%.
Eat an apple a day and keep your health
The latest research, which is in the process of continuing clinical trials on humans, could lead to the creation of new food supplements very soon, but don't wait, while you can get the same benefits by eating fresh, raw fruit.
Apples are a delicious and healthy fruit and green tomatoes are an equally healthy delicacy.
