Wiping your butt more than 3 times? this could mean a serious medical issue
|
Let’s be honest—we’ve all been there. You finish your business in the bathroom, and for some reason, you find yourself wiping more times than you’d like to admit.
Maybe it’s three wipes, maybe five—but according to one expert, if you’re wiping more than three times, something might be off.
In a TikTok video that went viral, a pelvic floor physiotherapist from BIEN Australia explains the issue and offers some surprising advice for anyone dealing with excessive wiping.
Spoiler: the solution isn’t as simple as just trying harder.
So what’s really going on?
According to Georgia Ruppert-Allen, a physiotherapist specializing in women’s health and pelvic floor care, wiping more than three times is often referred to as “fecal smearing.” This happens when traces of stool remain at the anal opening after a bowel movement.
“In essence, it occurs when too much stool is left at the anal opening, even after you’ve finished going,” she explains.
The solution: Try this technique
Before you throw your hands up in frustration, here’s the good news: there’s a simple trick that can cut down on all that unnecessary wiping.
The expert recommends using a method called “progressive pelvic floor contraction”—which sounds more complicated than it really is.
The goal is to gradually contract the pelvic floor muscles in a waterfall-like pattern: start with a 20% squeeze, increase to 50%, then 80%, and finally reach a full 100% contraction at the end.
Repeating this exercise four times can help close the anal sphincter more effectively, reducing the chances of leftover stool. The technique addresses possible weakness in the external sphincter, which may be the underlying cause of excessive wiping.
When to seek help
If the technique doesn’t work, don’t panic. The expert notes that other issues—such as hemorrhoids or scar tissue—can also contribute to the problem.
Ideally, bowel movements should occur between once and three times a day, or at least three times a week.
If you have concerns about your health, it’s always best to consult a doctor.
TikTok reacts
Unsurprisingly, the comments section on TikTok lit up with humor. From jokes about “hairy situations” to people sharing their own bathroom struggles, it’s safe to say the video struck a chord with many viewers.
The bottom line
Excessive wiping isn’t something you should ignore. By trying the pelvic floor contraction technique—and seeking medical advice if necessary—you can take steps toward a cleaner, more efficient bathroom routine.
